Introduction

Hi Everyone, today I will show you my oral presentation on symbols in Number the stars.

symbols

I chose an open ocean, an eagle, the star of David and a Nazi symbol.

Open ocean

I chose an open ocean because Ellen tells Annemarie that her mum is scared of the big ocean because it is so big and she doesn't know what's out there. It symbolizes how big the world is and how Annemarie wants to be a part of it and doesn't know what else is out there.

An Eagle

I chose an Eagle because it represents freedom. Eagles are free to go wherever they want, just the opposite from Jewish people during that time. All of Denmark's people want freedom and are doing anything to escape Hitler and his Nazi's, like how the Rosens and others hide under Henriks boat to escape to Sweden.

Nazi Flag

I chose a Nazi flag to represent the German occupation during WW2. Annemarie says "there are German soldiers on every corner" giving us a feel as to how many soldiers there actually were. They invaded homes and took over land and occupied parts of Europe. They played a very important part in making Jewish people fear the Nazi flag.

Star of David

I chose the Star of David to represent hope. The Star of David is a very important symbol to Jewish people and Ellen wore it around her neck. The star of David helped people believe that the war would end and the Jewish people would be safe. It was a sign of hope during the war and still is now.
