Y: If the object of the preposition à is a thing, the preposition and its object are replaced by y. Y also replaces a preposition of location and its object (dans le sac, sous la table, devant la porte, etc.).

Direct-Object Pronouns: If a verb does not require a preposition and the noun object directly follows the verb, the noun object is replaced by the appropriate direct-object pronoun: me, te, le, la, l', nous, vous, les.

En: The pronoun en replaces the preposition de and its object when the object is a thing. When the noun object is introduced by a number or another expression of quantity (beaucoup de, plusieurs, assez de, etc.), en replaces the preposition, if any, and the noun, but the expression of quantity remains in the sentence.

When me and te follow an affirmative imperative, they are replaced by moi and toi.

Disjenctive Pronouns: When the noun object of de is a person, the preposition retains its original position in the sentence, and the person is replaced by the appropriate disjunctive pronoun: moi, toi, lui/elle, nous, vous, eux/elles.

When le and les are used as object pronouns, there is no contraction with de or à.

Object pronouns used with a negative imperative immediately preced the verb and follow their normal order of placement.

Ne lui en donnez pas.
Ne me la donnez pas. Ne les ai mettez pas. Ne m'en parlez pas. |

With an affirmative imperative, the object pronouns immediately follow the verb, are connected to it by hyphens, and are placed in the following order: (1) direct object, (2) indirect object, (3) y, and (4) en.

Passe-la-moi. Mettez-les-y. Parlez-lui-en. Achètes-en. Vas-y. Donnez-m'en. Parlez-m'en. |

In compound tenses, the past participle of a verb using avoir as the auxiliary agrees with any direct-object pronoun preceding the verb.

J'ai vu mes amies --> Je les ai vues.

Object Pronouns are placed either directly before a conjugated verb or directly before an infinitive, depending on which verb the object pronoun logically accompanies. Never separate these pronouns from the verb form on which they depend.

Vous ne lui parlez pas? Lui parlez-vous? Vous lui avez parlé. Vous ne lui avez pas parlé. Lui avez-vous parlé? Il voudrait la voir. Il ne voudrait pas la voir.
