how baby feeds; a round, flat organ that transfers nutrients from the mother to the baby, and transfers wastes from the baby; keeps blood supply of woman and baby separate; giant filter; filters mom's blood for baby
Month 1
blood cells are taking shape, and circulation will begin; primitive face takes form with large, dark circles for eyes; mouth, lower jaw, and throat develop; baby is 1/4 inch long
Month 2
major organs develop; but are not finished growing yet; eyes and ears grow; heart beats strongly
Month 3
baby fully formed; arms, hands, fingers, feet, and toes are formed; can open and close its fists and mouth; teeth are forming; circulatory and urinary systems work; liver makes bile
Trimester 2
things are growing and developing; everything except lungs forms
Month 4
eyelids, eyebrows, eyelashes, nails and hair formed; teeth and bones become denser, baby can suck his or her thumb, yawn, stretch, etc.; nervous system is starting to function; reproductive organs and genitalia are now fully developed; everything developing
Month 5
baby's skin covered with vernix caseasa; baby 10 m. long, weighs 1/2 to 1 lb.
Month 6
baby may respond to sounds by moving or increasing the pulse, and you may notice jerking motions if baby hiccups; if born prematurely, baby may survive after this month with intensive care
Trimester 3
baby is pretty much just growing in size; getting bigger; lungs finish developing
Month 7
fat begins to be deposited on baby; hearing fully develops; baby changes position frequently; responds to stimuli (sound, pain, light, etc.); amniotic fluid begins to diminish
Month 8
baby kicking more; brain developing rapidly; can see and hear; most internal systems are well developed; lungs may still be immature
Month 9
lungs nearly fully developed; reflexes coordinated; can blink, close eyes, grasp firmly, respond to stimuli; baby moves less now, because not enough room; head will face down, to prepare for birth; don't want "breech"
