Describe apraxic gait.

Small steps, broad based. As if forgotten how to walk.

What causes apraxic gait?

Frontal lobe damage

Describe waddling gait.

Pelvis bent forwards, px waddles

What is this caused by?

Hip muscle disease

Describe scissoring gait?

Walk on tip toes, legs turned inward, legs cross over each other with each step.

What is scissoring gait caused by?

Bilateral spasticity

Describe parkinsonian gait?

Small paces, slow and shuffling, stooped posture, reduced arm swing (unilateral)


Tremor on walking.

What is this caused by?

Basal ganglia dysfunction

Describe the hemiplegic gait.

Flexed upper limb and extended lower limb on the same side - leg must be circumducted to move.

What is the hemiplegic gait caused by?

Unilateral upper motor neuron lesion caused by MS or Stroke

Describe Ataxia.

Broad based gait


Px may sway from side to side and may fall


Appears drunk

What causes ataxia?

Cerebellar problems - lack of muscle coordination

Describe steppage or high stepping gait.

Px overflexes hip, lifts knee high and slaps foot down on walking

What causes foot drop?

Peripheral neuropathy or common peroneal nerve lesion (unilateral)

What are some common diseases that cause cerebellar dysfunction?

Head trauma


Viral infection


MS
