What is lattice enthalpy?

The enthalpy change when one more of ionic substance is formed from its gaseous ions.

What is first electron affinity?

The enthalpy change when one electron is added to each atom in one more of gaseous atoms.

What is a Born-Haber cycle?

What is enthalpy change of solution?

Enthalpy change when one more of solute dissolves in a solvent.

What is enthalpy change of hydration?

The enthalpy change when one mole of gaseous ions dissolve in water.

Factors affecting enthalpy of hydration:

Ionic charge and ionic radius: increased charge makes Δhyd more exothermic. Increased ionic radius makes hydration enthalpy less exothermic. This is due to attraction of ions to water.

Factors affecting lattice enthalpy:

Smaller ion and greater charge gives a more exothermic lattice enthalpy.
