What is lattice enthalpy? |
The enthalpy change when one more of ionic substance is formed from its gaseous ions. |
What is first electron affinity? |
The enthalpy change when one electron is added to each atom in one more of gaseous atoms. |
What is a Born-Haber cycle? |
What is enthalpy change of solution? |
Enthalpy change when one more of solute dissolves in a solvent. |
What is enthalpy change of hydration? |
The enthalpy change when one mole of gaseous ions dissolve in water. |
Factors affecting enthalpy of hydration: |
Ionic charge and ionic radius: increased charge makes Δhyd more exothermic. Increased ionic radius makes hydration enthalpy less exothermic. This is due to attraction of ions to water. |
Factors affecting lattice enthalpy: |
Smaller ion and greater charge gives a more exothermic lattice enthalpy. |
