Pre interview steps:

Why do interpreters generally want to speak extensively with patients about their CC?
give interpreter medical hx relevant to visit, CC
interpreter meets with patient/family, determines language variety

patient will tell interpreter, not doctor
What should you do during the interview when using an interpreter?

Advantages of consecutive interpreting:

Before the patient leaves. you should:

Effect of culture on a visit:
talk directly to patient, don't say "Tell him/ask him"

allows more accuracy, doesn't require a lot more time

be sure patient understands instructions

can change presentation, perception, course of action, outcome of illness
Key to culture exchange:

Explain code of professional conduct for interpreters:

Explain appropriate skill level:
open mind, communication

condifential, appropriate skill level, respect

assess needs of patient/physician, determine if able to provide service, since you can't know if they omitted or change info
How should an interpreter conduct themselves appropriately?

Problems with using family members as interpreters:
won't give own opinion, avoid dual roles, unobstrusive

confidentiality, family may not know medical terminology, add their own opinion, answer questions for patient
Explain triadic relationships:
patient --> interpreter --> doctor
interpreter is advocate for patient, helps doctor, helps "experts" to talk (doctor as technical expert, patient as symptoms expert)
