What half cell is oxidised?

The half cell with the lowest Ecell value.

What is standard electrode potential?

The maximal electromotive force of a half cell compared with a standard hydrogen cell.

What is a standard hydrogen cell?

A 1moldm-3 solution of H+ ions with 100kPa H2 gas and a platinum electrode at 298K. With an Ecell value of 0.

Limitations of predictions using Ecell values:

High activation energy- slower rate.

If solutions are non standard concentration equilibrium will be shifted, so rate may be different.

What is a primary cell?

Non rechargeable cells. Chemicals used up and voltage falls.

What is a secondary cell?

Rechargeable cells. The reaction can be reversed for recharging.

What is a fuel cell?

Fuel and oxygen enter the cell, products flow out. The electrolyte remains in. They can operate continuously and don't need recharging.
