What are the five main steps in the digestive process?

1)Ingestion - intake of food via mouth

2) Digestion mechanically or chemically break down food to their subunits

3) Movement food must be moved along the GI tract in order to fullfill all functions

4) Absorption- movement of nutrient across the GI Tract in order to full fill all functions

5) Elimination- removal of indigestible molecules

What are the 4 major layers that make up the wall of the GI tract?

-Mucosa the innermost layer, produces mucus that protect the lining and also produce digestive enzymes.

-Submucosa 2nd layer of loose connective tissues that contains blood vessels lymphatic vessels and nerves.

- muscularis- 3rd layer made of 2 layers of smooth muscle that move food along the GI tract

- Serosa outer lining that is part if the peritoneum

What is the pathway that food follows?

Mouth> Pharynx> esophagus> stomach> small intestine>large intestine>rectum >anus

Eight

The first part of the digestive tract includes what?

Mouth

Pharynx

Esophagus

Three

What is the role of Lipase, Carbohydrase, Protease and Salivary amylase

Carbohydrase- digests carbohydrates into simple sugars

Protease- Proteins to amino acids

Lipase- fats to fatty acids

Salivary amylase- starch to maltose

What is peristalis

It is a wave of smooth muscle contraction that forces food along the alimentry canal

What is the role of the pancreas in the digestive system?

It secrets pancreatic juices and two hormone insulin amd glucogon.

- the juice is secreted into ducts which merge to form the pancreatic ducts, and together with the bile duct empty into the dudenom

How do we swallow food?

Voluntary phase- food is swallowed from mouth to pharynx.

Involuntary phase- once food in in pharynx becomes a reflex. Food moves down through the esophagus through persistalsis

What are 3 functions of the stomach

Store food

Start digestion

Control movement of chyme into small intestine

What is the role of the gall bladder

Has stored bile from the liver, secretes it into small intestine to emulsify fats.
