What is Dupuytren's Contracture?



What it also know as?

-Dupuytren's is a condition in which one or more fingers become permanently bent in a flexed position.


- it usually begins with small hard nodules just under the skin of the palm


-fibrous layer of connective tissue that lies just underneath the skin in your palm and fingers (called fascia) to thicken and tighten.


-the skin near your fingers becomes more thicker and less flexible


-worsens over time until fingers can no longer be straightened


-affects the fascia on the palm of the hand.



-Dupuytrens is also known as Vikings diesease because it occurs more in people whose ancestors come from northern Europe.

What is an Inguinal Hernia how does it occur?



What causes it to occur?

-inguinal hernia occur is when fatty tissue or part of the bowel pokes through into the groin at the top of your inner thigh.


- It pushes through you a weak spot in the surrounding abdominal wall and into an area called the inguinal canal


-can appear as swelling or lump in the groin or as an enlarged scrotum, swelling may be painful



-it is the most common type of hernia and Mainly affects men. It's often associated with ageing and repeated strain on the abdomen.

-What is a Femoral Hernia ?



-How does it occur?

-same as inguinal hernia, femoral hernia is uncommon and occurs when fatty tissue or part of the bowel pokes through into the groin at the top of your inner thigh.


-it pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle wall (abdominal wall) into an area called the femoral canal



-much less common than inguinal hernia and tend to affect more women than men because of the wider shape of the female pelvis.



-Occurs suddenly because of strain on the tummy such as constipation strain or carrying and pushing heavy loads.

What is a Hiatus Hernia how does it occur?

-Hiatus Hernia is occurs when part of the stomach pushes up into your chest by squeezing through and opening in the diaphragm (the thin sheet of muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen)



-not exactly sure how it occurs but it is said it is as a result of the diaphragm becoming weak with age or pressure on the abdomen.

What is an Umbilical Hernia ?

- this occurs when fatty tissue or a part of the bowel pokes through the abdomen near the navel


-occurs when part of the stomach pushes up into the chest by squeezing through an opening in the diaphragm (the thin sheet of muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen)



Mostly common to occur in babies when the opening of the abdomen in which the umblical cord passes doesnt seal properly after birth. However adults can also be affected as a result of repeated strain on the abdomen and age.

What is an Incisional Hernia ?

It is when our tissues pokes through a surgical wound in the abdomen that hasn't fully healed

What is an Epigastric Hernia ?

It is when fatty tissue pokes through the abdomen between the nave and lower part if the breast bone (sternum)

What is a Spigelian Hernia ?

- It is when part of the bowel pokes through your abdomen at the side of your abdominal muscle below the navel

What is a Muscle Hernia

This is when a part of the muscle pokes through the abdomen, can also occur in leg muscles as a result of sports injury.
