What is the Kingdom of God and what are 3 interpretations on what it might be?

Jesus' teaching on the age to come served several processes depending on how we interpret what is meant by the Kingdom of God. There are three interpretations on what the Kingdom of God might be;

an actual place

spiritual place

a symbol of moral life

Kingdom of God definition

Describes Gods rule or reign whether in this world or the next

What does the Kingdom of God tell us?

Depending on what interpretation seems most likely will determine whether heaven, hell or purgatory are actual places, or symbols of how to live a moral life.

What is the Kingdom as present moral and spiritual state

Jesus' own teaching on the Kingdom of God in the Gospels was a call for moral and spiritual reform. In many of Jesus' teachings he presents the Kingdom of God as if it has already started.

What do scholars call the kingdom presented as a present moral and spiritual state?

They refer to it as 'inaugerated eschatology'.

What emphasises the 'nowness' that indicates the kigndom of god is a current moral and spritiual state?

Jesus' healing miracles where he cures the lame, gives sight to the blind and hearing to the deaf are the signs of the age to come.

Jesus parables are also signs of 'nowness' of the Kingdom as a time to overcome racial prejudices and failings of established practices.

The Kingdom as a future redeemed state

Jesus' eschatology although symbolises it could b a present state, it could also be seen as a a future redeemed state as the future kingdom is a state where the righteous live in harmony with God by his teaching in a redeemed world.

What does St Paul say jesus' resurrection symbolises?

St Paul says that jesus' resurection is the first sign that the fallen world is restored and that now that humans can 'see and know God' face to face.

St Paul says that before christ humans were only able to see the future heavenly state through a 'dim glass' but now it is possible to glimpse at the future state properly.

Punishment and Justice

In answer to questions posed by jeremih in the bible; 'why is it that the good suffer and the wicked prosper', the response is that wheras the good will be rewarded in the afterlife, the wicked will be punished.

As jesus says the wicked have already enjoyed their reward, and so as a matter of justice the wicked will be excluded from the future kingdom.

Four problems - The delay of parousia

The first generations after Jesus' resurection hoped for Jesus' returnv and the arrival of the Kingdom, one of the earliest prayers recorded in the New testament uses the words; "Lord come!"

What happened after the first generation?

Jesus did not return so new eschatology emerged to deal with the issue ; the DELAY of parousia.

eschatology definition

the part of theology concerned with death, judgement, and the final destiny of the soul and of humankind.

What is the first thing jesus warned?

Jesus himself warned against making exact calculations when the present day would end and judgement take place - stating that no one knows when it will happen in Mathew.

What did people conclude when reviewing Jesus' parables?

Reviewing Jesus' parables some emphasised the theme of delay and the sudden return of a master ' like a thief at night'

With this came the warning that depsite the delay of the kingdom there was every reason to be morally vigilant because the end will be without warning

What does John Divine say in the book of revelation?

John Divine's vision in the book of revelation suggests that heaven is not a disembodied state but a continuation of the conditions of this world.

He descibes this in 2 ways . In the first, the saints who have undergone the first resurection who rule in heavenly state for a number of years.

In the second, after the final vanquishing of satan, the world is replaced by a new earth and heaven.

Time and judgement

Even though the exact moment of judgment day at the end of time is uncertain, many of the new testament writers suggest that 'final' judgement is less important that personal.

What does the author of John's gospel say?

The author of John's gospel offers the interpretation. For him, what matters is the way in which individuals respond to christ: judgement is personal and continual.

Those who reject christs teaching effectivley condemn themselves.

Purgatory

Although the new testament does explicitly use the word 'purgatory', there is widespread view that after death those who have died in a state of grace may continue to seek forgiveness for their sins and recieve due punishment until final judgement

In later christian teaching what was thought about purgatory

In later christian teaching the idea that the intermediate state
