Indentured Servants
England's surplus amount of displaced farmers looked for employment. They volunteered themselves to their Chesapeake masters. In exchange, they got th transatlantic passage and 'freedom dues' like corn, clothes, and small land.
Headright System
made by Virginia and Maryland to encourage the importation of indentured servants. Whoever paid the passage of a laborer, got 50 acres of land. Masters received ownership of land and bought many large estates with it
Sir William Berkely
Virginia's Governor, 'how miserable that man is that governs a people where six parts of seven at least are poor, endebted, discontented, and armed.'
Bacon's Rebellion
1676
thousands of Virginians broke out of control led by planter, Nathaniel Bacon. They included frontiersmen who didn't like Berkeley's policies towards Indians. Berkeley refused to retaliate. Bacon chased him away and ended it by hanging 20 rebels. This attack formed more tension and unhappiness to the servants
Slavery
This began because of economic reasons. There were different 'codes' saying that blacks were a property of life. They were unable to learn how to read or write. They mostly came from the South .
Triangular Trade
This method of trade was highly profitable. New England would send rum to Africa, where they would send slaves back. New England would send timber and foodstuffs to the West Indies, and Africa would send them slaves as well. England would send tobacco, fish, lumber, and flour back to New England.
Middle Passage
Also known as the transatlantic sea voyage. It brought slaves to the New World. It was a long journey that went from Africa to America. However, many slaves did not survive because of diseases, poor conditions, and confined spaces.
Half way Covenant
1662
Ministers came up with a new way of church membership. The church doors eventually became available to any person, if they were puritan or not.
Colonial Family
Most families marry in their 20's and have a child every 2 years. Their children became dependent with stable environments to grow up and learn. More economic and property rights for women in the south. Widows had the right and title to land. Divorce was very rare and adulterers were forced to wear and A on their clothes
Cotton Mather
a Puritan Minister who defended the death sentence verdicts of several witchcraft trials in 1693. His writing was published wide spread and became very popular.
