Fight or flight response

Psychological response to a profound stressor that helps a person deal with the situation at hand

Infectious disease

Medical condition caused by the growth and spread of small half organisms within the body. Capable of being transmitted with or without direct contact

Communicable disease

Disease that can be spread from one person or species to another

Transmission

The way an infectious agent is spread. This can be through contact, airborne, foodborne or vector borne.

Direct contact

Occurs when an organism is moved from one person to another through touching without any intermediary.

Blood-borne pathogen’s

Micro organisms that are present in human blood and can cause disease in humans is blood containing the pathogen enters the bloodstream. For example sexual transmission

Indirect contact

Involves the spreading of infection between the patient with an infection to another person through a contaminated inanimate object. For example, a needle stick.

Airborne transmission

Involves spreading an infectious agent for mechanisms such as droplets or dust. For example a common cold is moved from person to person by coughing and sneezing

Stress

Reaction of the body to any agent or situation that requires a person to adapt. Two kinds of stress: eustress (positive stress) and distress (negative stress)

Stressor

Any agent or situation that causes stress whether good or bad

Acute stress reaction

Occur during stressful situations.

Delayed stress reactions

Manifest after the stressful event.

Cumulative stress reactions

Can a car when you are exposed to prolonged or excessive stress. Can result in physical symptoms or job burnout

Defense mechanisms

Psychological ways to relieve stress usually automatic or subconscious. They include denial regression projection and displacement

Blind panic

Fear reaction in which a persons judgement disappears entirely - may cause mass panic among others

Conversion hysteria

Reaction in which a person subconsciously transforms his or her anxiety into a bodily dysfunction; may be unable to see or hear or become partially paralyzed

Burnout

Exhaustion of physical or emotional strength.

Critical incident

Event that overwhelms the ability to cope with the experience, either at the scene or later

Critical incident stress management

Resource available for emergency personnel who have been involved in particularly traumatic calls or incidents. Decrease the likelihood that PTSD will develop after such an incident.
