2nd session

-goal: get a 3rd session

-ask about missing members

-ask if anyone has any questions or anything to add

*if the family takes the lead let them (but not in the 1st session)

*no major interventions

3rd session

- usually been a crisis

- more comfortable with taking a risk

- usually family less guarded/ more likely to emote

-therapist needs to spread out the focus (don't let one person monopolize the time)

-expect resistance because of discomfort of discussing the family secret/going deeper

Fallacies of the family

1) we don't need help/ don't have a problem

2) the IP has to want to quit/ family has no say or influence

3) treatment cures the IP

4) when use stops the problems stop

Predictable family issues in early recovery

1) Pink Cloud (A false sense of confidence for the family/ IP)

2) Trust for the IP is hard for the family

3) Walking on egg shells

4) Building up to drink (B.U.D.)/prelapse

*maybe restless, anger, or withdrawn

5) enabling

Reasons for enabling:

- ignorance

- by default

- resistance to the change of recovery

6) the IP does not abstain

If IP is an adult, be careful not to take sides and monitor usuage

If IP is a child:

- start with the least restrictive intervention

-just talk to them

- have measurable consequences and enforce them

- don't give them money

- don't rescue them from school/legal trouble

- lock them out of the house after curfew (if weather permits)

- call the police when they participate in illegal activity that causes harm to another person

- if child is 18, you can provide them an ultimatum

Other issues that are likely to come up in family therapy

1) sexual problems

*don't ask in first session/ in front of kids

*if problem exist...this would be a good referral

2) support group triangulation (spouse feeling left out because of support group)

* feelings of jealousy, disappointment , and frustration arise

3) subtle blackmailing (IP using recovery to get their way)

4) sponsorship by family member

*bound to fail

*seek first to understand not to be understood- Sean Covey
