What is the difference between mitosis and meiosis?

Mitosis occurs in most cells whereas meuosis occurs in sex cells

What are the two major stages of the cell cycle?

Interphase and mitotic phase

What are the parts of interphase

G1, S phase, and G2 phase

There are 3

Summarize the steps of interphase

Growth and preparation for DNA replication. DNA replication until both strands of DNA in a cell are replicated.

What phase is depicted here?

Interphase

What is a sister chromatid?

Replicated strands of DNA produced during interphase and attached at the centromere

What are the 4 phases of mitosis?

Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase

What phase does this depict?

Prophase in the meitotic phase

What phase is depicted here?

Metaphase of the mitotic phase

What phase is depicted here?

Anaphase of tge mitotic phase

What Phase is depicted here?

Telophase of the mitotic phase

What is cytokinesis?

Begins in anaphase and ends in telophase, cytokinesis is when the cytoplasm of two newly forming cells is divided.

Describe prophase

"P is for puffy" balls of chromosomes that form within the nucleus and migrate to different poles of the cell. At the end, the nuclear envelope disappears, freeing the chromosomes to be moved by spindle fibers in the next step.

Describe metaphase

"M is for middle", when chromosomes allign along the middle of the cell.

Describe anaphase

"A is for apart" as the sister chromatids move apart towards the cell's poles.

Describe telophase

"T is for two" as two new cells become visible and separate completely through cytokinesis. At the end, a new nuclear envelope forms around each set of chromosomes

Do cells die?

Yes! Apoptoesis.

Describe the centromere

A central region where sistwr chromatids stay attached before cytokinesis.

Define a spindle fiber

Elongated microtubules that grow from the centrioles and push them apart.

Identify spindle fibers
