- Dating back to the early church, the Catholic church has believed that monasticism and priesthood to be a more spiritual calling than any other profession. This was the first division between the sacred and the secular in vocation. It created a dualism that elevates the spiritual at the expense of the secular.
- Perfect life = monk or philosopher; permitted life = what we need to do to survive.
What is the Protestant Distortion according to Guiness?
Protestant Distortion is elevating the “secular” over the spiritual or sacred. Secular form of dualism
- It is more extreme than Catholic distortion. It severs the secular from the spiritual altogether and reduces vocation to an alternative word for work.
