What is ratio?
a:b
What is a proportion?
a/a+b Numerator is in the denominator. Value ranges from 1 to 0. time usually specified but not necessary
What is rate?
a/a+b per unit time. Measure of change in num per unit denom. Freq of event
What are measures of morbidity?
Incidence(Cumulative incidence &incidence rate) & Prevalence (Point & period prevalence)
What are measures of mortality?
Crude, specific, case fatality rate
What is incidence?
The # of NEW cases of disease that occur during a SPECIFIED PERIOD of time in a POP at risk. Measure of risk. (#new cases/# people @ risk)
What is prevalence?
The proportion of affected persons in a pop @ a specified time. *includes NEW & OLD cases. Measure of burden not risk. (# people w/ disease in pop @ specifi time/ # people in pop @ specific time)
What is cumulative incidence?
Calc using a period of time during which all individ considered @ risk are followed for outcome. Proportion that range 0-1
What is incidence rate?
Denominator is sum of the diff times an individ is @ risk. (New cases/ person time @ risk)
How is prevalence expressed?
% per 1000, etc
What are the 2 ypes of prevalence?
Point (prevalenve @ a point in time-most common) & Period (prevalence for a period of time)
What is the relationship b/w incidence & prevalence?
prevalence= incidence x duration (influenced by recovery, death, migration)
