Define burden of disease?
A measure of the impact of diseases and injuries, specifically it measures the gap between current health status and an ideal situation where everyone lives to an old age free of disease and disability. Burden of disease is measured in a unity called DALY or disability adjusted life years.
What does DALY stand for?
Disability adjusted life years.
What are DALY's?
A measure of burden of disease, where one DALY equals one year of life lost due to premature death and life lived with illness, disease or injury.
What do DALY's allow us to measure?
How much disease exists in a population and the effect the disease is having on their quality of life.
How are DALY's calculated?
YLL (years of life lost) + YLD (Years of life lost due to disability)
Define YLL.
Refers to the fatal burden of disease of a population.
Define YLD.
Non-fatal burden of disease, focusing on healthy years lost due to disease or injury.
What do YLD's consider?
The number of new cases (incidence), average duration of the condition, degree of disability or impairment and impact on quality of life and lifestyle.
What is the relationship between DALY's and burden of disease?
The more DALY's the greater the burden of disease.
