Double Effect

It refers to an act desired not as an end in itself but as a foreseen effect or consequence of an act.



1. If the agent foresees the effect evil


2. If the agent is free to refrain from doing that, which is the cause of theevil effect


3. If the agent knows that he is morally bound not to do that, which is the cause of the evil effect

All of these conditions must bepresent to make the agent beascribed for any moral liability

1. The Action must be morally good in itself.


2. The good effect of the act must precede the evil effect which is morally allowed to happen as a regrettable consequence.


3. There must be a grave or sufficient reason of doing the act.


4. The evil effect should not outweigh the good effect.
