What does the 5 - 6 shift button do?

Turns auxs 3-4 into 5-6.

How many aux sends are always sending out of the 1604?

4 auxs.

What type of EQ is the low-frequency EQ on the 1604?

Low Band Shelf.

How many bands of EQ are there in a channel and what are they?

3. Hi, Mid, Low. Mid also has a frequency selector.

How does the mid-sweep EQ work?

Semi-parametrically, Only some parameters are flexible. Bandwidth of the mid EQ is fixed.

How do we send to a dynamic effect? (1604)

Inserts, rear of console.

What are some examples of a dynamic effects?

Compressor, EQ, Limiter, Gates, Expanders.

A dynamic effect is a serial or parallel connection?

Serial connection. Inserts are serial.

What type of connector do we have to use with one insert point?

1/4 inch TRS cable

How does a TRS connector work?

Tip to send. Ring to receive.

What do the control room source buttons do?

Chooses what we hear in the control room.

Where does a post aux send get it's feed from in the channel?

After fader but before pan pot.

Where does a pre aux send get it's feed from in the channel?

Before EQ but after low cut.

Why do we use an aux send for time based effects?

So we don't manipulate the original signal. Inserts change the whole signal.

AFL solo mode is mono or stereo?

Stereo.

When do we use AFL solo mode?

For recording and mixing.

A time based effect is usually sent from tape send or tape return?

NEITHER. It's sent from an aux send.

What are some examples of time based effects?

Reverb, Delay, Flanger, Chorus...

How does the low-cut filter work & when do we use it?

To remove rumble and transmission noise. Cuts the lower frequency at a rate of 18db per octave.

What do we use phantom power for?

Powering condenser microphones.

What is phantom power?

48v DC sent to a microphone from an outside source.

On the 1604, how do we phantom power on?

Switch. Top left, rear of console.

When should we never use phantom power?

Ribbon microphones.

What does "double monitoring" mean?

Sending 2 copies of the same signal to your monitors. Not an accurate representation.

What is the difference between a split and inline console?

Split has one path per channel.

Inline has 2 distinct paths per channel.

What does PFL & AFL stand for?

Pre Fader Listen.

After Fader Listen.

Direct outs are typically used for what?

Sending signals directly to a multi-track.

Direct outs are pre or post fader?

Post fader.

What do aux sends, the L/R mix, and Subgroups have in common?

They are all ways to get signal to leave the board.

What can we use aux returns for?

For bringing back in time based effects when channels are full.

On the 1604, which aux sends would we use for a musicians headphone mix & why?

1&2 because they have a pre Fader option.

We send to a headphone mix pre or post aux? Why?

Pre. So that moving the faders doesn't affect the headphone mix.

A time based effect is usually sent pre or post? Why?

Post. So that the ratio of the effects direct signal remains the same.

Where does the control room source "tape" get its feed?

Tape in.

In a recording situation, why might we use the subgroup busses to go to the multi-track tape?

For control grouping & for sending signals to a multi-track with limited tracks.

In a mixdown situation why might we use the subgroup busses?

For control grouping & for sending signals to a multi-track with limited tracks.

What is the purpose of the level setting procedure?

To achieve best signal to noise ratio.

The level setting procedure is done during recording or mixdown?

Recording. (Before recording)

What is the advantage of using the direct outs instead of the subgroup busses to go to tape?

Direct out is the shortest, cleanest output signal from the board.

In a recording studio, where are the main outs intended to be patched to?

A two track.

Which aux return has the most assignment options?

Aux 3.

If you had an outboard EQ & wanted to run a signal through it, how would you send to it from a channel?

Insert.

What are all the ways you can send a signal from a channel?

Direct out, Aux send, Subgroups & Main mix.
