What was the Bandura et al. Experiment? |
An experiment where a child was predisposed to aggressive behaviour and acts, and whether they would imitate it. |
What was the aim of the study? |
To investigate observational learning of aggression. |
What was Bandura's Hypothesis? |
1. subjects exposed to aggressive models would be more likely to imitate aggressive acts resembling their models2. subjects exposed to non-aggressive models would have an inhibited effect on their subsequent behavior 3. same sex model - greater level of imitation4. boys would be more pre disposed towards imitating aggression. |
How did Bandura obtain his sample and what method did he use? |
It is thought that parents gave permission for children to take part in research associated with Stanford University when signing up to Stanford nursery. This method is called opportunity sampling. |
What were the characteristics of Bandura's sample? |
72 Children Equal boys and girls Age ranged from 3 to 5 years old All enrolled in stanford nursery |
What design did Bandura use to create controlled participant variables? |
He used a matched participant design, matching the mean ages, gender and mean aggression rating of the children to create matches. |
Can you describe the pre-testing process? |
The Experimenter and Nursery Teacher rated 51 of the participants of four characteristics due to prior levels of aggression in terms of interactions in the nursery school.1. Physical Aggression2. Verbal Aggression3. Aggression towards inanimate objects4. Aggression inhibitionAfter both judges compared results through correlation. A high correlation co-efficient was found of 0.89, therefore a high level of inter rater reliability was found also - consistent results. |
What are the three conditions? |
- Aggressive Model- Non Aggressive Model - No model (control) |
List the IV's and model conditions |
IV: 1. whether model was aggressive2. gender of model3. gender of participant Model conditions: 1. Aggressive male model 2. Non-aggressive male model 3. Aggressive female model 4. Non-Aggressive female model 5. No model |
How many stages where in the bandura et al. experiment? |
3 stages |
What did the model use to show aggression? |
The bobo doll |
What were the results of Bandura et al's study? (Quantitative) |
What were the results of Bandura et al's study? (Qualitative) |
- girls more verbally aggressive- aggressive model, more aggressive- boys more likely toimitate same sex models than girls |
