cardiovascular system includes

heart, blood, blood vessels, lymph, vessels, node, spleen and thymus

septicemia

pathogenic microbe or their toxins found in the blood with inflammation

-any cardio or lymph disease will include septicemia b/c anything in the lymph is eventually dumped into the blood

sepsis

septicemia with inflammation fever chills and increase heart rate

severe sepsis

all the septic symptom and low bp

septic shock

bp become completely uncontrolled

lymphagitis

inflamed lymphatic tissue red line follows the vessel

1. endocarditis

-caused: strep

-strep from the mouth into the bloodstream

-bacteria leaves teeth into pulp of tooth into blood stream and follows a path to the heart

-infection in an unclean piercing in or around the mouth

-acute: staph-caused: more serious, rapid destruction of the heart valves, fatal

2. tularemia

-caused: francisells tularensis

-zoonotic rabbits & squirrels ,parenteral bite/tick/deer fly or air via urine or feces

s/s: ulcer at site moves from thr site into blood into resp system

3. brucellosis

-caused: Bricellia

-from: cows, goats, sheep

-contaminated food imports from mexico, not deadly

s/s: fever, malaise, night sweats, extreme muscle pain

4. Anthrax

-caused: Bacillus Anthracis

-dangerous depending how its contracted

found: soil all grazing animals

1. cutaneous: cut/wound painless ulcer w/ black center, 20% fatal

2.G.I: ingested not properly cooked, nausea/abd pain/ bloody diarrhea, 50% fatal

3.inhaled: low fever/cough/chestpain/24-36 til death looks like common cold. 99% fatal

5. gas gangrene

-caused: Clostridium Perfringens; feeds off dead tissue, obligate anaerobe, gas production w/ growth

-ischemia to necriosis to gangrene

-found: in soil and intestines

-tx: remove the dead tissue(sx), antibiotics, hyperbaric chamber, high O2 to kill bacteria

6. Cat scratch

caused: Bartonella Henslae

from: cat scratch under claws

s/s: papule at site, massive swelling of all nodes, not deadly

7. Plague

caused: Yersinia Pestis

from: rats to flea to human, when human contacted others can get it via droplet

s/s: buboes(swollen nodes)

8. Lyme disease

caused: Borelia Burgdorferi

from: mice, deer to human via tick

s/s: bulls-eye rash, untreated: into blood irregular heart beat, arthritis,

hemorrhagic fevers

as a group are characterized as very high fever and uncontrolled bleeding somewhere in the body

1. yellow fever

caused: A. Aegypti

from: mosquito, resv: monkey

s/s: fever, chills, headache, n/v, jaundice

lives: in tropical areas

2. dengue fever

from: mosquito

s/s: fever, severe muscle/joint pain, rash

lives: caribbean

3. marburg virus

from: mosquito

s/s: fever, vomiting blood, bleeding internal organs/eyes

resv: monkey

4. ebola

from: mosquito

s/s: fever, profuse, uncontrolled bleeding, high mortality

resv: fruit bat

1. Chagas Disease

-protozoan disease

-caused: Trypanosoma Cruzi

-resv: rodents, possum, armadillo

-vector: kissing bug/triatome feeds and defecates

s/s: fever, swollen glands esophagus/colon paralized, very swollen abd

treatable

2. Toxoplasmosis

-protozoan disease

caused: Toxoplasma Gondii

resv: intestinal tract in cats, inhaled cat feces- litter box

ingestion of uncooked meat w/ oocyts

s/s:still birth- neo damage

pregos cant have cats

3. Malaria

-protozoan disease

caused: plasmodium

from: mosquito

s/s: fever,chill, vomit, headache followed anemia/cardio collapse

-initial bite: goes to liver makes a sporozoite and undergoes schizogony replicates and releases 100's of new plasmodium called merozoites and goes out kills RBC schizogony again in RBC

tx: vaccine/meds w/ quinine any SE

4. Leishmania

-protozoan disease

from: sand fly

-transmit into the blood w/ lesion at site of infection

s/s: lesion of the skin or MM

-can effect the brain and cause mania once lesion goes away

1. Schistosomia

-helminth(worm) disease

from: blood fluke

-needs to swim in infected water, feces of infected human in water supply, fluke penetrates skin of new host, infects all organs, urethral bleeding

protective structures of the respiratory tract

-filled with small hairs act as a filter, first place where mucus is produced

-catch pathos and trap it

-lining of resp tract has cilia to move pathos out

-mucus,hair, cilia, tonsils catch and kill pathos

*resp tract diseases*

4-itis

1. pharyngitis: infection causes inflamm in the throat

2. laryngitis: sore throat vocal abilities are compromised

3. tonsilitis:inflam of tonsils, patho in tonsils

4.sinusitis: inflam of tonsils, inflam/drainage of sinus cavities

(ends in "-itis" is inflammation of)

1.strep throat/pharyngitis

-streptococcal infectionbacterial

-resp tract disease

where: in pharynx/throat, strep infection in tonsils

caused: S. PYOGENES resistant to phagocytosis, (pyo means fire)

trans: droplet or direct contact very contagious

s/s: very painful, high fever

tx: antibiotics, can get it over and over again b/c lives in tonsils

* most common resp dx*

2. scarlet fever

- streptococcal infection bacterial

-resp

when strep release toxin that redens the skin resulting in skin rash and spotted tongue

3. diphtheria

bacterial resp

cuased: C. DIPTHERIA

-bacteria gets into the tonsils and immune system kills it, once killed releases toxin in cell wall , endotoxin- release and builds up in tonsils and seeps out forming a pseud-membrane

spread and cover the back of throat adenoids and palatine

D in DTAP, prevents it

spread: droplet

s/s: sore throat, fever, malaise, swelling of neck

4. pertussis "whooping cough"

resp

-caused: BORDETELLA PERTUSSIS

p in dtap vaccine prevents it

-spread:resp tract and secretes toxin that binds to cilia in trachea

-can commonly fight it off w/ vaccine

s/s: violent cough, can result in brain damage due to lack of O2

5. TUBERCULOSIS

BACTERIAL RESP

-caused: MYCOBACTERIUM TUBERCULOSIS

-inhaled and infect ,lining of lung, aveoli as it is inhaled the macrophages ingest it, bacteria survive in the macrophages cannot kill it but send out chemotaxis alot at site, clump together form a tubercle

-tubercle grows in macro until they leak out move to resp tract

s/s: difficulty breathing, coughing spreads bacteria

6. PNEUMONIA, 3 types

BACTERIAL RESP

1. streptococcus pneumonia

*common

infection of lung

s/s:fever, diff breathing, chest pain, large production mucus

2. h.influenza normal microbiota of resp, assoc w/ alcoholics, poor nutrition cancer diabetes

3. mycoplasma pneumonia: walking pneumonia, mild,no cell wall antibiotc aimed for cell wall wont work

1. INFLUENZA

VIRAL

s/s: fever chills headache muscle aches

-vaccine made yearly

-2 envelope proteins: HA, NA spikes diff strains

"h1n1" pandemic of swine flu
