What are the basics of nationalism?
-Associated with Classical Liberalism
-Because people wanted to vote and equalities
-Extension of strengthening the state
What was nationalism like in France?
-Nappy III= crowned himself empire (first elected pres), popular for progressiveness, saw that he had to do something for the working class, builds sewers, more voting, reorganizes Paris (widens street)
-Nationalism not connected to liberalism, but authoritarian ruler (afraid of Communism)
-Nationalism for conservatives = Nappy serves ppl not Bourg
-Public wars= state as a whole involved in war
What was the realist movement?
-Romantic age is out
-Tell it how it is, cut the emotional crap
-People good/evil based on nature/nurture
-Environment shapes us, no human nature we follow the laws of nature
What happened in German Pre-Unification?
-Shame of the Princes= Napoleon gives them an offer they can't refuse, princes sold out for better land
-Bismarck= prime minister, Junker, unification has to be by force, German states under hegemony of conservative Prussia, makes smart alliances, crush middle class
-William I=king of Prussia, has Bismarck as VP
-Real Politik= realistic politics, practical, form/break alliances to help you
-Holstein= German speaking, Denmark wants, Scheswig= Danish and German, France and GB with Denmark, Prussia wins, Germany with Austria against Denmark
-1867=universal male suffrage, but could manipulate the masses against themselves
What happened in the Franco-Prussian War?
-Germany wants Alsace-Lorraine (who speak French) back, Bismarck wants to isolate France
-Spain allies with Germany
-Prussians win= march through Paris, William crowns himself emperor in Versailles
What was a united Germany like?
-Based on an autocratic rule
-Aristocratic social structure, liberal middle class, constitution of 1871=but a "gift" bc not coming from the will of the people
-Industrialization rises
-Building up armies
-Kulton Kampf= culture struggle, who is German? Catholicism threat to unification, so they put limits on Catholic education
What was Austria-Hungary like?
-Different ethnicities and languages, think Slavs are inferior, right afraid of self-deter.
-Been in conflict with German, crushed, not powerful
-Francis Joseph= old-fashioned, ends up with dual monarchy until WWI
-Magyars= Hungarians, angry but like dual monarchy
-Budapest becomes major city
Who does Classical Liberalist Democracy better?
-France= Germans took over Paris, Bismarck says he can't make a treaty unless they have democracy, internal turmoil, Blanqui=French political activist, revolutionary take power at all costs, but have republic with a president and universal male suffrage
-Panama= canal, French and British are first to invest, but French can't pay so give it to America
-Dreyfus= Jewish army officer, accused of treason but was innocent, huge political scandal in Frace, D pardoned
-But France lasted until WWI
-Has suffrage, but time period brings trouble, larger middle class but poor still poor, scandal and massive military failure
What are the basics of the Victorian Age?
-1830s-1901
-Marked by Queen Victoria, chastity, hard work, you need to help yourself being poor builds character
-Individualism
-British are willing to compromise to avoid rebellion
-Darwinism= survival of the fittest (people on top deserve to be there), adaptation =constant competition, justification for imperialism
What was England like in the 1830s?
-Increasing discontent with laborers, reform movement, Chartists=UMS, radical
-Disraeli= conservative, anti-UMS, favor land owning British elite, pro-Anglican but Jewish
-Gladstone=liberal, laissez-faire, limit role of monarchy, UMS
-But need government to provide=police, education, health care
-Use protective tariffs
Old vs. new imperialism
-Old= economically mercantilist, politically companies and countries, socially migration to America
-New= more involved role of government, don't see British or Belgians less migration, mostly Asia/Africa, capitalist, cultural hegemony (dominance)
Who was Hobson?
-Expansion is attributed to nationalism
-Critical of Imperialism, economic, don't need to push into other countries, more goods than consumers you need to expand markets (not political)
-Capitalism is controlling government, system naturally moves toward expansion, push for competition for goods
-Nationalism=driving force for economic imperialism
What is nationalism as reflected by Social Darwinism?
-Rising sense of nationalism= one culture better than another
-Racial and ethnic superiority (on bottom it's your fault)
What was the humanitarian movement?
-White man burden= need to fix other cultures problems bc they are superior
-Teach what's right and wrong
What was the British East India Company?
-Private company that had rights to go into other countries
-Government gives them naval power and money, started wars with gov money
-Free agent, British government can't control them, do not follow same codes of conduct
What happened with the British in India?
-India=colony of England until 1857, getting cheap new materials
-No strong leadership in India, corporate with British, beginnings of cultural hegemony
-Sepoy Rebellion=new cartrigages you have to bite and tear laced with pig/cow fat, indians revolt kill British soldiers, rebellion crushed, creates racial hierarchy, direct imperial rule
-Education=set up Brit style, English as 1st language
What is the scramble for Africa?
-Geography=French have a presence in North and West, race for Sahara/Sub, no regulation
-Belgians=Leopald, Congo becomes his land, massive blood shed
What happened in South Africa?
-Dutch East India Company= going into Africa, becomes company rule, Dutch settle in SA
-Boers=farmers/ranchers, believe in pre-destination, mad that abolished slavery
-Migrating because of diamonds and gold, whites flood in, British try to make Boers mad to get them to go to war
-War begins= Afrkanners vs. Brits, Boers lose they establish themselves as a free state but part of British state
-Apartheid= institutional racism, blacks can't be citizens (no rights), Boers started it bc felt threatened
What was the Berlin Conference?
-Gentlemen's agreement initiated by Leopold
-Spheres of influences=start to carve up Africa w/o consent of the ppl
-Spurred by nationalism/competition=African colonies aren't developed markets, Euro's don't know what raw materials they have
