Arteries

Tunica intima

Inner layer of artery, consists of endothelial cells that line the lumen

Tunica media

Middle layer of artery, smooth muscle fibers, elastic

Tunica adventitia

External layer, loose connective tissue

Vasa Vasorum

Comprised of tiny arteries and veins that supply the walls of the blood vessels

Arteries vs Veins

Arteries have hollow elastic tubes criticle for steady blood flow, Veins have little elastic tissue/muscle which make them collapseable

Aorta

Largest major artery in the body

Capillaries

Minute hair sized vessels connecting the venous and arterial system, walls single layer, nutrients and waste exchange here.

Ascending aorta 3 branches

Brachiocephalic trunk (rcca, rsa), left common Carotid artery, left subclavian artery.

Depending aorta

Enters the abdomen through the aortic opening of the diaphragm anterior to the 12th thoracic vertebrae

Abdominal aorta

Posterior to the left love of the liver, diameter 2-3cm and 1-1.5 at tapering

Common iliac arteries

Major arteries inferior to the heart

Celiac trunk

2cm from diaphragm, arises anteriorly and branches into the common hepatic, lft gastric and splenic arteries

CHA

Common Hepatic Artery, courses at a 90° angle and branches into proper hepatic and gastroduodenal artery.

GDA

Gastroduodenal artery, courses along the upper border of the head of the pancreas to the Superior portion of the duodenum

LHA

Left hepatic artery, supplies blood to the caudate love and left lobe of liver

RHA

Right hepatic artery, supplies blood to the GB and and right lobe of the liver

Left gastric artery

Anterior to the left of the esophagus and courses along the lesser curvature of the stomach to supply blood to these structures

Splenic artery

Largest vessel in the celiac trunk, tortuous along the Superior portion of the pancreas, supplies blood to the spleen and stomach

SMA

Superior Mesenteric Artery arises 1 cm below the celiac artery, posterior to pancreas, follows parallel course along abdominal aorta.

SMA 5 branches

Inferior pancreatic artery, duodenal artery, colic artery, ileocolic artery, intestinal artery

IMA

Inferior Mesenteric Artery, supplies the descending colon, sigmoid and Superior rectal arteries. Difficult to visualize with ultrasound. Courses to the left around 3-4th lumbar vertebrae

Phrenic arteries

Paired, small vessels, arises laterally and supplies the diaphragm

Renal arteries

Sits just below the SMA, divides into anterior and inferior renal arteries at kidney, duplication is not uncommon, RRA is longer than the LRA and courses posterior to the IFC.

Gonadal arteries

Arises inferior to the renal artery

Lumbar arteries

4cm on each side of the aorta, travel laterally and posteriorly, supplies muscle skin, bone, and spinal cord.
