This is difficult for the therapist because they must create a long-lasting clinical process, while gaining the trust of child who has endured great mis-trust, who’s natural instinct is to not trust adult figures due to past experiences. Without this trust a child and therapist cannot move forward in therapy. Therefore it is the therapist responsibility to embrace an attachment perspective as a guiding principle, in order to achieve a desirable relationship. The therapist must have an understanding of the intrapersonal and emotional dynamic behind the behaviors in which the child is presenting. The overall goal of therapy is to bridge the gap between conceptualization and the desired outcome of the future behavior. (The American Journal of Family Therapy, 42:1-13,2014). Attachment therapy is be used by the therapist to improve the child’s trust in the parents, as well to improve the social and emotional functioning of the child. These domains include the exploration of the origins of the attachment disorder such as abuse, neglect etc. As well as the manifestation, which follows an investigation the role the attachment disorder, plays in the motivation behind problematic interactions.
