Neighborhood Watch Program
According to National Sheriffs Association, “Neighborhood Watch is one of the oldest and best-known crime prevention concepts in North America (2010).”When the National Sheriffs Association established the Neighborhood Watch Program in 1972, the main purpose of the program was to educate individuals about securing their homes to reduce the chances of being victimized by criminals (National Sheriffs Association, 2010). However, as time went on Neighborhood Watch Programs took on a proactive role in helping to reduce crime by encouraging individuals to collaborate with their local law enforcement agency to monitor and report suspicious activities in the community.

With the help of educators and law enforcement officers McGruff has been educating children on crime fighting tips by focusing on the importance of stranger awareness. Through this program helps children learn to identify safe houses, known as a McGruff house, by the famous stickers posted in windows and front doors. The McGruff Neighborhood Watch Program helps communities coordinate programs geared toward child safety, by engaging the neighbors within the community to work together to prevent crimes against children. Another Neighborhood Watch Program, which is educating children on possible dangers is known as the Be Safe and Sound in School program.
This program focuses on educating children of possible dangers when they are at school. According to the National Crime Prevention Council, “Be Safe and Sound in School is a program created by the National Crime Prevention Council with collaboration with the Bureau of Justice Assistance, United States Department of Justice. (2010)” The program provides awareness of school safety and offers suggestions on school security issues (National Crime Prevention Council, 2010). With the recent rise in crimes commit within school settings teachers, administrators, and law enforcement are educating students and parents on the proper procedures in the event of an emergency, such as a bomb threat to the school.
