Trayvon Martin, born February 5th, 1995, was a 17 years old Black American high school student. He lived with his mother in Miami Garden, Florida. According to Greg Botelho, his article titled “What Happened the Night Trayvon Martin Died”(Botelho,2012), discusses about the true reason why he died and how it mainly relate to police brutality. It all started with Trayvon Martin buying skittles and a bottle of Arizona from a convenience store. The neighborhood watch and guard, named George Zimmerman suspected that teen and decided to call the police. (Botelho,2012) This is considered prejudice because he spotted a guy with a hood on, walking in the rain, which led to a huge misjudgement. Referring from the seven reasons stated in the first body paragraph, Zimmerman did not receive adequate training and decided to use his own judgement. Eventually, this led into Zimmerman pulling his “black, 9mm semiautomatic handgun”(Botelho,2012) , shooting Trayvon Martin in the chest. Within minutes, paramedics arrive, hoping to heal him, Unfortunately. “Three minutes later, at 7:30 p.m., Martin was pronounced dead.”(Botelho,2012) From this incident, the evidence suggests a case of police brutality to a young, innocent teenager. Zimmerman claimed it was self defense and it was Trayvon Martin that attacked Zimmerman first. This is highly importantly because clearly Zimmerman did not receive adequate training and could not assess the situation. People should be aware of cases going around the world and needs to stand up for each other. In addition, people around the world needs to find a way to resolve this issue in order to lower the amount of deaths and brutal injuries. An example of fighting against police brutality is to fund and participate in an organization against police brutality. A notable and reputable organization that resolves police brutality is CopWatch, which is helpful documentary. Copwatch started because of these incidents occurring to the same ethnic group. “ The death of Eric Garner in New York City, the Baltimore arrest of Freddie Gray, and the shooting of Michael Brown” are prime examples of police brutality.(Robinson, 2017) led the start of the investigation of police brutality. These men are all Black Americans and was targeted due to suspicions. This eventually led to riots and protests, but does not seem to solve the problem: police brutality. Eventually, Copwatch, the documentary found ways to solve police brutality by filming the police. They teach “civilians to exercise their legal rights”(Robinson, 2017) by filming the police during an incident. This is important because it did lower police brutality rates while filming the police because when the police officers are on camera, it seems like they would not do ridiculous things like shoot a civilian.
