At a time of growing tension between religious groups in America, a record number of Muslims have reported religious discrimination claims. Although Muslims only make up roughly 2 percent of the United States population, they accounted for about one quarter of the religious discrimination claims filed last year (Greenhouse 2010). Most Americans reported a heightened distrust and hatred toward Muslim-Americans after the 9/11 attacks and the War on Terror in the Middle East. Islamophobia continues to be provoked by anti-Muslim extremist and tensions between evangelical Christianity. In May 2011, Osama bin Laden was finally captured and killed. The decade long War on Terror reported a death toll surpassing 250,000 casualties and upwards of $4 trillion in United States spending. The prolonged antagonism associated with the war led to a shift in American values. Recently Muslim discrimination in the United States has received national attention. Protesters aggressively disapproved of plans to build a Muslim cultural center and mosque only two blocks from ground zero. The hostile opposition for the approved mosque plans has created a public uproar motivated by Islamophobia. Most of the publics objections have nothing to do with the zoning regulations, but instead focus on faith. Protestors claim that the majority of Muslims support violence, terrorism, the abuse of women. Predicting that ultimately Muslims intend to end Christianity in the United States. Anti-Muslim activists broadly Muslim depiction ignores the vast diversity within the Islamic faith and ties all Muslims to its most extreme branches. These discriminatory generalizations are not made when members of other major faiths in America commit horrific acts motivated by their religion. Recently a Christian extremist who believes is a sin, admitted shooting dead an abortion doctor who was notorious for performing late abortions.
