It is a common fact that blood is necessary for the body in order to work properly. At plain sight everybody’s blood can seem similar, but not everything is always what it seems. There are variables that make people’s blood different from one another, such as different types of blood, different amounts of red blood cells and different amounts of white blood cells, and possibilities of different containments such as bacteria and viruses in the blood. In the past, doctors never knew of all the different variations that were found in this mysterious substance. Throughout the decades, slowly, doctors have been unraveling the mysteries blood holds. If a person a specific blood type in transfused blood of another type it can lead to a problematic reaction.(48) By just considering the characteristics of red blood cells, blood can already be seen a complex substance, but there is still more to blood than just that. White blood cells are the fighters against infection. There are five different types of white blood cells, each one does it own specific job to fight infection. If a person has a deficiency of white blood cells, they will become susceptible to infection. Platelets are what produce clotting whenever blood is exposed to the outside world. These three elements combined make up what is half of blood. Plasma is what makes up for the other half. Although plasma is mostly water, it contains many materials within it, such as sodium chloride, glucose, amino acids, proteins and wastes such as uric acid. Together all of this makes up what blood. Slowly, doctors have been learning about these different building blocks of blood and how they come into effect when performing a blood transfusion. (21-27)
In the Nineteen hundreds blood transfusions made big advancements but along with the advancements came new challenges that needed to be addressed. Keeping donated blood from clotting was a problem solved in 1915; with this solution it became possible to keep blood from going blood quickly (50).
