World War I was the worst man-made catastrophe that left many negative effects on the entire world including, the World War II, the birth of atomic bomb , and the Cold War. One positive effect though was the advancement in the field of space exploration. In this war Austria-Hungary, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire (the Central powers), clashed against Serbia, Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan, and the United States (the Allied powers). The war began on July 28, 1914 as a small conflict between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, but soon engulfed the other major countries involved in treaties with the two countries. The war lasted for four years killing more than nine million soldiers and wounding 21 thousand more. It finally came to an end when the Allied Powers defeated the Central Powers and made the Treaty of Versailles to maintain peace. The Treaty of Versailles eventually led to a more devastating war, the World War II. The treaty stated that Germany had to claim full responsibility for the war, pay money for the war damages, limit the size of their military, and give away parts of their land. The German delegates were forced to sign it infuriating the Germans who felt betrayed by their delegates for signing the treaty. Adolf Hitler, a German politician, claimed that he would make Germany a better place and defeat the Allies. All the Germans saw him as a ray of hope and stood behind him.
