In many cases, women struggle with inequality and oppression because the government lack enforcement to protect them. In Iran as well as Nigeria, the government focuses on other elements such as economic growth rather than protection of women. The lack of government support and protection affects the inequality that women faces. With no protection against violence and oppression faced by women, it makes women extremely vulnerable in society. In some cases, the government takes an even detrimental step, and attacks women who do speak up about the inequalities. In Iran it is more apparent that the government contribute very less effort in protecting women. Instead of protecting, in Iran, women specifically, female activists are often harassed, attacked, and in some cases even killed. According to Amnesty International, Atena Farghadani, was punished severely for publishing cartoons that satirizes the Iranian parliament’s effort in passing a bill that criminalizes sterilization and the restriction of contraception. Farghadani spoke out against rights relating to female contraceptives through her cartoons by portraying parliamentary members as monkeys, cows and other animals. She was sentenced to 12 years and 9 months in prison for her art. Continuing on, according to Human Rights Watch, three activists were imprisoned for speaking out for women’s right.
