In Act 1, Scene 2 of the Tempest, we are shown the mixed relationship between Caliban and Prospero. It displays a theme of betrayal and how values of one another could be lost through dishonoring one another’s family. In this case, Caliban had raped Prospero’s daughter but Prospero had killed Sycorax, Caliban’s mother. As you could see, both show a display of betrayal towards one another which concludes to the reason that this passage would match a modern day soap opera of a relationship between a girl’s father and their best friend because of the way it’s acted, the use of language, and the way it’s staged.

Both were happy at one point but not until them both betrayed each other. Betrayal is a Signiant theme in this scene because it represents each character in many ways. An example would be for when Caliban had raped Miranda, Prospero’s daughter. The fact that Caliban had done such a thing to a close friend shows betrayal. In Prospero’s words, “thou didst seek to violate, the honor of my child.” What he finds as the result of Caliban’s behavior is dishonorable and betrayal. Prospero and Caliban’s relationship was very strong and for Prospero seeing that he “violated the honor of my child”, makes him feel angry and hatred towards Caliban. Caliban saying, “Thou didst prevent me. I had peopled else, this isle with Caliban’s.” shows that he is more of a disgusting characters because of his interest for Miranda. Caliban is not the only who shows sign of betrayal. Prospero had done some deeds that are considered to also be a sign of betrayal as well. Caliban had felt happy that he being taken care of from Prospero and with Miranda teaching him language. When Prospero had taken the land away from him and killed his mother, he felt just the same as Prospero. You can that because of these events, it lead to the ongoing archenemy relationship between Prospero and Caliban. These elements of the play are such a big part in making the Tempest a very realistic adaptation. It moves the audience and shows how a relationship of love could suddenly turn into an everlasting eternity of hatred all by just taking something precious of someone or something. As you could see, Act 1, Scene 2 shows a display of betrayal towards one another which concludes to the reason that this passage would match a great Shakespearian live play because of its theme of betrayal, the use of action and movements, and the use of sound effects and
