Background:
In 2013, Dr. Denise Herzing and her team with the Wild Dolphin project had developed a voice translating system to allow humans and dolphins to communicate. It implied that the ability to communicate with dolphins would fundamentally change the direction on the research of machine learning language. Also this ability to communicate with other species would give us the probability to learning aliens' language and even talk to them.
Launched by NASA, in 1959 there were several articles discussing the potential to use wave to communicate between stars. And in 1960, the USA astronomer Frank Drake conducted the first hunt for alien life with an 85-foot antenna in West …show more content…
Based on the idea of Wild Dolphin, He claims that the algorithms are similar. Like breaking down dolphin’s sound and translating it into English, he says we could one day decode an extraterrestrial message such as alien's one
At this moment, my project will mainly focus on the technology of translating dolphin’s sound wave into English. By identifying which area of the computer science it falls in and examing what kind of mathematical technique it contains
Area:
Denise Herzing’s group has invented a language translating device called Cetacean Hearing and Telemetry (CHAT). It mainly consists of a underwater keyboard and several sound receivers. Although currently there is only a prototype, it works as instant language translator which allows human being talk to …show more content…
Firstly, by measuring the complexity of the dolphin's language and work out the frequency of the different “words” it appears in a "paragraph", it shows that the information structure of dolphin’s language is very similar to human beings language such as English.
The scientists found that in all kinds of language which human beings speak, there is a common 45 degree line appears in the language structure. In details, by sorts the words in a paragraph according to their frequency of appearing. From the most frequently word to the least one, there will be a 45 degree regression line in the graph. And the same property is also found in the dolphin’s language
Moreover, Dr.Denise discovered that if we have suffient amount of sound collected from the dolphin as a data base to measure the dolphin’s language information entropy it will have the information entropy of 3.48 bits. This is very similar to human beings languages information entropy. For example, in English, a two word composite has 3.56 bits entropy while a three words composite has 3.13 bits entropy, the following is the
