Imagine being with your family and friends on any given day and all of a sudden someone takes you away from them. This is what parks are doing to get orcas, which is considered to be kidnapping and if it were children instead of whales it would be illegal. They are kidnapping them in the wild and making the orca their entertainment slave so they can gain a profit. What they are doing is inhumane and also not healthy for these orcas. Seaworld and other parks want to entertain people and make money, so they take orcas from the wild and breed them.…

The animal I am researching today is the manatee, also known as known as Sirenia. Scientist have measured that manatees live to about 60 years or more. Manatees can be found in shallow, slow-moving rivers, estuaries, saltwater bays, canals, and coastal areas, particularly where sea grass beds or freshwater vegetation flourish. The average adult manatee is about 10 feet long and weighs between 800 and 1,200 pounds. Two interesting facts are that manatees can hold their breath for twenty minutes and the closest living relatives are elephants.…

(Randall, 1973) IV. Social Behavior of Bottlenose Dolphins Another study conducted by Connor, showed how bottlenose dolphins do indeed have specific behaviors around other dolphins, or female mates. Male dolphins were found to travel in pairs or trios in order to protect their females, and also, when they are traveling, sleeping, or socializing, they do it abreast other dolphins. (Connor, 2006) During a study being conducted on bottlenose dolphins, the behavior of the dolphins was classified into five categories: neutral, abrupt, submission, sexual, and aggression.…

The first quadrant of the book “Island of the Blue Dolphins”, by Scott O’Dell, tells us about a girl named Karana and how she jumps off a ship to go back to her brother. Some of the most important events happen in the first quadrant. First, the Aleuts arrive at the island so they can hunt for sea otter. Secondly The Aleuts are not willing to share the fair share that they were supposed to share so the indians get in a battle with the Aleuts and Karana’s dad (Chief Chowig) dies.…

Dolphins are a member of the marine mammal group called cetaceans, which also include whales, orcas, and porpoises. Being water dwellers and needing oxygen to live, these mammals have to sleep in a way that prevents them from drowning, which is different from how you and other land mammals sleep. Your bodily functions during sleep include the inactivation of all voluntary muscles, however, you are equipped with a breathing reflex which allows you to breathe automatically so you will not suffocate during sleep. Dolphins aren't equipped with that breathing reflex, so their way of sleeping is very different and is important to their survival. Unihemispheric slow-wave sleep Unihemispheric slow-wave sleep, or USWS, is a sleep phenomenon that exists when one hemisphere of the brain is asleep and the other hemisphere remains…

Introduction A splash occurs as a creature leaps from the water into the air, arcs of water droplets falling from its bottle-like snout and flippers. This creature is a bottlenose dolphin. I chose the bottlenose dolphin because it is one of the world’s smartest creatures, along with being altruistic and playful towards other dolphins, humans, and even whales. I was inspired to research more about bottlenose dolphins after seeing several dolphins in the ocean while on vacation at Maui, and I wanted to learn more about the lives of these fascinating animals.…

Most of the fish in their diets are bottom dwellers but some surface dwelling fish represent in their diet as well. A large part of their diet is noise producing fish, thought to be due to dolphins using sound to locate prey. In my speech, I will be describing the trials and triumphs of solitude, and the bittersweetness that come after. In both The Diary of Anne Frank and Island of the Blue Dolphins, there is a time of isolation with both times of optimism, and also pessimism. In both Island of the Blue Dolphins and The Diary of Anne Frank, the book starts off with an average girl of her time and place without anything to write a book about, but then their lives take a turn for the worst. In Island of the Blue Dolphins, Karana, the main character, loses her father in a unnecessary battle over otter pelts and what is a fair share.…

I had come to realization that maybe not all dolphins are the same. I was in class and the class was normal, the sharks were grouped together at the back, the dolphins were clustered together in front of the sharks and I was seated to the right of the class with the Clownfish. With the dolphins, usually in class their always gossiping about hair, beauty products and whatever the sharks do (usually centers around the gym) instead of actually listening during class or doing any of the work. I think if I were that pretty I wouldn’t have to try in school. But one dolphin did catch my eye.…
