“I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.” Patriots would die for their country over and over again if it meant that it would gain independence. The Revolutionary War, was an ongoing war between the British and the Americans that lasted for 8 years. People like George Washington, Samuel Adams, Ben Franklin and many more, played a significant part in America gaining their independence and breaking away from a foreign country. Along with the help of many women, African Americans and Europeans, they helped America break free from Britain.
To begin, women played a major part in the Revolutionary War. Despite women not having some of the same rights as men, but some could fight in the war. While men were off at war, women stayed behind and worked. Many African Americans lost their lives helping America break free from Britain. Not all black people were able to fight in the war, but the ones that did, served. It states in It states in Document 5 that “all free male persons, hired servants, and apprentices between the ages of 16 and 50 years . . . be enrolled or forced into companies. This excluded slaves by definition, but free blacks were registered to serve, though “without arms.” The Militia Act forced free African Americans to serve in the war. Also cited in Document 5, it states, “…dozens of black Virginians served in every one of the state regiments, freezing, starving, and dying at Valley Forge.” By the time spring came, what was left of the group of black soldiers marched with mainly white soldiers.
