Who Was Responsible For The Salem Witch Trials In The Crucible

In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible the town Salem turns chaotic after teenage girls start to act strange. The Crucible is based off the Salem witch trials which occurred in1692. In Salem the girls started to accuse other people, mainly women, of witchcraft merely based on their looks or what people thought about them. In The Crucible, the girls are accusing other people to put the blame on someone else because of what the girls did in the forest. There are three responsible for the Salem witch trials in The Crucible. They are Abigail Williams, Reverend John Hale, and Mary Warren. Abigail Williams is the main cause of the Salem witch trials.in The Crucible. First, Abigail has an affair with John Proctor. She wants Elizabeth to die so that she can have John Proctor for herself. This leads Abigail to drink blood in the woods in order to kill Elizabeth Proctor. Next, when Abigail is questioned about what occurred in the forest she blames Tituba for drinking the blood, “She made me do it! She made Betty do it!” (187). Hale is the witch specialist who evaluates Betty and determines that Betty is not waking up because of witchcraft. Therefore, Hale is responsible for the start of the witch trials. Next, Hale questions Abigail intensely about drinking the charm in the forest, so she panics and blames Tituba. When Hale questions Tituba, she feels pressure to confess in order to avoid being hanged. This leads to Tituba accusing Sarah Good of also being a witch. Hale starts to get the girls accusing others. Also, Hale is the leading witch specialist who is in charge of evaluating if someone is a witch or not. Although, Hale never used any concrete evidence, he only had spectral evidence.
