Reporter: Jillian Daly Sahel is one of the poorest and most vulnerable regions in Africa. It is situated south of the Sahara desert and stretches from Mauritania to Chad. Consequently it is constantly suffering from a continual negative cycle called food insecurity.
Sahel suffers from desertification, poverty, conflict, natural disasters and population pressure which contributes to a continual negative cycle of food insecurity that needs to be broken.
Today CARE a charity run organisation “helps 20 million people who are at risk of food insecurity and 2.5 million of need lifesaving assistance.” (CARE, 2014). Sahel suffers from drought on a regular basis along with its compromised locust plagues, rising food prices, flood, poor crop yields, cultivation and overgrazing which has led to the desertification of the soil leaving millions hungry and malnourished. Sahel is a vast barren band of semiarid land that stretches from West to East involving eight countries. Half of the world starving countries are located in Africa. Sahel only receives rain once a year and recently the rain received is well below the average. The issue of food insecurity will continue to increase as the ever expanding population attempt’s to cope with the extreme drought conditions. According to the United Nations the population in 2013 was 100 million creating health issues with the poor, elderly, and very young being the most vulnerable.
