The name of the story in which I am creating a character analysis for is “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” This story is written by Joyce Carol Oates. The summary of this story is an attractive teenage girl named Connie whose curiosity for the world has gotten her into a predicament. The importance of the character is Connie shows us that all humans are naturally curious. In her eyes as a teenager the world is a fascinating place where every way she turns there are new things to discover. Connie will rationalize whether or not something is acceptable in order to obtain any given knowledge that she desires. My thesis is Connie is a naturally curious and vain girl whose desire for new information creates for her a thin line between good and evil.
Connie’s character is being obsessed with her physical appearance. It is apparent right from the start through the author’s words that Connie is very good looking and she knows that. This is where Connie acquires her self-worth. “She was fifteen and she had a quick, nervous giggling habit of craning her neck to glance into mirrors or checking other people 's faces to make sure her own was all right.” (pg. 1) Connie’s character is lacking because of this. She is at the point in her life where physical appearances are everything so she believes being attractive is good enough and she does not need to be anything else. “She knew she was pretty and that was everything.” (pg. 1) This fact produces the next sub…
