The Growth of a Nation: One Track at a Time
What would Canada be like if we didn’t have railways? Railways have had and continue to have a great impact on our daily lives and we as Canadians may not always realize it. Canadian railways transport 75 million people, and more than 70 per cent of goods in Canada each year (Unknown, 2011). The first railway to be constructed which affected Canadians was in the 17th century. A mining railway was built and it was used to haul quarried stone. Later, in the 19th century, as technology advanced, the first transcontinental railway was constructed. (Marsh, 2014) It was like a new beginning …show more content…
After that, the railway led to the expansion of Canada’s confederation. The railways had many positive influences on Canada. The Railway resulted in Canada’s expansion into Canada as we know it. In addition to the expansion of Canada’s physical boundaries, the railroad was responsible for the an influx of immigrants, which contributed to the growth of businesses’, as well as a major expansion of Confederation, which all contributed to the dramatic changes that happened in Canada. From the 19th century until now, Canada continues to improve and expand railways across Canada, providing many benefits to our country.

Since the railways were constructed Canada has become more culturally diverse meaning there was an increase in immigration in Canada and exposed Canada to different religions and cultures. There were people from China, Japan, British Columbia, and places all over, coming into Canada to settle with their families and find jobs. The railways also …show more content…
The railways expanded to the West, so if people were going to live there, there needed to be facilities available to further attract newcomers. For example, a general store would be necessary for inhabitants to get their daily supplies. Furthermore, goods and services provided by banks, mills, farms, shops, as well as post offices and medical services in the area made it more sustainable and attractive to those who would come to live there. As James Penny the founder of JC Penny once said, “Growth is never by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together”- James Penny (Unknown 4, Unknown). This demonstrates how the forces worked together such as store owners, electricians, construction workers, grocery store owners and other important businesses’ that came together to make the railway an accomplishment, they all successfully did their part. They all chose to open businesses’ around the railway in the west so that it would help to increase the population of settlers in the West. Another way in which the railway increased their business was to strongly promote trade from Japan. Vessels began to come bringing different goods such as tea, silk, and much more, which in turn created more jobs and increased population (Lavalle, 2008). Producing businesses’ and increasing population took a couple of years but
