In business managing and coaching are approaches to maintaining discipline and supporting personnel. According to Ladyshewsky (2010) generally managers are people in supervisory positions that take on a position of command and control. Coaching is considered to be more of a supportive role. Combining the two ideas creates a leadership style known as MAC. The key functions of a MAC are to encourage improvement in the workforce through empowerment and providing feedback as needed, instead of just implementing rules and guidelines.

MACs can help transform employees that think of their job as a place they go to make a paycheck. One way this can be done is inspiring employees to believe that they are a vital part of a team and their contributions are valuable. Changing ones mindset can lead to improved outcomes (Guo & Anderson, 2005). A major shift in healthcare has to do with new Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement methods. With the creation of Accountable Care Organizations (ACO), fee-for-service is on its way out while to payment for outcomes is the new focus (Filso., Hollingsworth, Skolarus, Quentin Clemens, & Hollenbeck, 2011).
