Sense-certainty is Hegel 's approach to proving that knowledge of the world is not a wholly passive process, he does this through a dialectic from, meaning that the argument moves as a conversation, with hegel presenting an answer to a question, in this case how one can know about the world through consciousness, and then works to show how the answer is wrong in itself, because it holds inconsistencies. This essay will be read as in two parts, first i shall discuss how sense-certainty fails, and then will approach the question of what that means for epistemology. Finally leading to the conclusion to show that the impact of sece-certainties …show more content…
This is evident because, as hegel explains specifically, when one says it is now day time it may appear that one is talking of a particular now, but now is not a particular thing(Hegel, )
Hegel explains this by asking “What is the ‘This’?” in reference to how one can call something a particular, with the answer being “‘Here and Now’”. Followed by the further question of “What is ‘Now’?”, the response “‘Now is night” is given as an example, and hegel as you wit it down, to explain tat “But later on the now is not night, it is day”, demonstrating that there is no lasting truth in the particulars sense-certainty offers. Hegel elaborates on this explaining that “The Now that is Night is preserved, i.e. it is treated as what it professes to be, as something that is; but it proves itself to be, on the contrary, something that is not. The Now does indeed preserve itself, but as something that is not Night…The self-preserving Now …show more content…
As one said at the star of the essay, our aim was to show that hegel was mirroring the way he believes history to progress within his dialog; meaning that he was just going through the motions in introducing sense certainty as part of the self consciousness, as a means to the end of introducing the notion of Spirit, which is Hegel 's own addition to the epistemological conversation. Though one did not have space enough to discuss spirit in it’s entirety, one believes it was made obvious enough that Hegel never intended his argument to end the epistemological discussion, only to present his own idea in the most logical format, as Pinkard explained. It is worth noting that hegel 's rebuttal of sense-certainty may not even be damaging to the empiricist standing because, as kain discussed, Hegel’s sense certainty is a more direct form of knowledge than any empiricist expects experience to deliver; and as such Hegel can be read to be discussion something completely different to
