What Does It Mean You Be An American? Essay
First off, the term American needs to be defined for the question to be efficiently answered. Often an American is referred to as a person living within the United States of America. However, there are two continents with the name of America; North America and South America. So why do not all the people living on both continents not receive the name American? According to the dictionary the term American is defined as "of or pertaining to the United States of America or its inhabitants." However, in some ways the term can be used as reference to both North and South America. The dictionary 's second definition of the word American, " of or pertaining to North America or South America; of the Western Hemisphere." Such as when saying "the American continents." There is, however; a third definition, "of or pertaining to the aboriginal Indians of North and South America ...." This poses the question, "to whom does the question, 'What does it mean to be an American ' refer to?" It is assumed that the reference is made towards the citizens of the United States because it is the only country whose citizens are called Americans. Canada 's citizens are Canadian, even though they are a part of North America. As well as Mexico. Same with South America.
So then the question should be "What does it mean to be an American of the United States?"
