What does being an American mean to me? Being an American means that I say the pledge of allegiance, I can vote when I'm of age, but most of all it means that I am a free citizen and that I am proud to live in the United States here in Missouri. But there is much more to being an American than saying the pledge and raising a flag. I've noticed Americans tend to talk a little louder, laugh a little harder and tell their stories more freely. It means that when I grow up I can pick the job I want and vote for the president I want to serve. It means I have the choice to pick my school and which church I want to go to. They need to show general respect a patriotism and cherish what is theirs and what it represents; the flag. Freedom and equality for all. Another important trait for an American is hard work. An American is bombarded with many responsibilities, obligations, and duties every day. Americans need to fulfil their duties as an American if they truly want to consider themselves as Americans. Americans are always trying to improve the quality of life for the next generation. All parents hope their children will have it better than they did while growing up, which sometimes they don't think will happen. As the world changes so does our government to suit our needs. By having a changing government means that someone is always working to do the best for us, the citizens of the United States. What does it mean to be an American? Surely there are multiple definitions. In my opinion, an American is someone who is living to be “free”, believing in his freedoms, exercising his rights established by the constitution, has pride in his country and the constant effort to make it better.
