What does it mean to be an American? A very direct and clearly stated question that may appear to have an equally clear and direct answer, however, once you scratch the surface to delve into the details of this thought provoking question, it’s not so easy to answer. I believe that because being an American is a different experience for each individual it can also influence and change the meaning of what it means to be an American for each person. There are so many factors that come into play that can deeply impact the meaning; one’s gender, culture, religion, ethnicity, race, political association, economic stature, etc., so many pieces that make up the greater whole and then add the dynamics of an individual’s own ideas and perceptions into the mix, it makes it nearly impossible to nail down one definitive answer that seems right to answer the question. However, I do believe that there is a common thread that can be considered the tie that binds us together as “American”, our bond of civic solidarity, a never-ending want and need for belonging as a recognized and equally accepted member of society.
