What does it mean to be impoverished in America? There are three ways of defining poverty in America: the official Census Bureau method, which uses a set of income thresholds that vary by family size and composition; an experimental income-based method called the Supplemental Poverty Measure that factors in government programs designed to help people with low incomes; and a consumption-based method that measures what households spend. Poverty has been a consistent problem throughout history. Despite being one of the most affluent countries in the world, America is still prone to the devastations of poverty. A staggering 45.3 million (14.5%) people, unfortunately, live below the poverty line in America. (Census) One of the major causes of poverty is government dependence of welfare. America’s welfare programs are fiscally unsustainable; they encourage a state of necessity instead of lifting people out of poverty and perpetuate behavioral poverty that disintegrates morale; through welfare reformation, we can effectively address and solve poverty.
In 2000 the poverty rate was 11.3%. (Brookings) One could assume with such a technologically advanced society, where computers run our day-to-day functions and billions are spent in space exploration, poverty would be the least of our problems; however, this is not true.
