The world has been totally destroyed to the best knowledge of The Man and The Boy. They live day to day in a wasteland where everything is either dead or dying, including people. The book opens showing a gray image of Earth. “When he woke in the woods in the dark and cold of the night” (McCarthy, 1). Secondly, the plot the Joads follow mirrors The Man’s and The Boy’s. The Joad’s must leave Oklahoma to find work. “No place but live’n on the road,” Ma Joad said. When they finally make it to California, it is nothing like they expected. No work and no safe place to go. Eventually they made it to the Department of Agriculture; a haven full of everything they needed. They loved it there and quickly settled down. But they Joad’s knew they can’t stay. They left in search of something bigger and better. A better life. The same events happen in The Road, just a little out of order. To start it off, The Man and The Boy lived only on the road. They strayed here or there for supplies, but always came back to continue on towards their destination. Eventually, they find a cellar stocked full of “everything. Everything” (McCarthy, 209). It was a haven they never wanted to leave, but The Man knows something better must lay down the road. The Man and The Boy finally make it to their destination - the sea - but find nothing worse, but definitely nothing better. They must always keep moving in search for the best
