Wernher von Braun was born into a very well known and wealthy family. Wernher’s father was from an aristocratic family and because of their military success, the von Braun men received the title “Freiherr”, which is equivalent to a Baron (“Wernher von Braun”, n.d.). When he was just two, the world war began and Emmy left her husband and took the boys to Krakow, an Austrian city. Magnus wrote to them while they were staying in Krakow and told her to go to Zinnowitz, by the Baltic Sea because Austria was becoming more dangerous. Not long after this move, they all reunited and stayed in Wirsitz. Magnus received a new job, sending him to Lithuania ad Poland, so the boys and Emmy moved to Grenzow for a year where they saw Magnus only on rare visits. Magnus then received a promotion that allowed them to purchase a mansion Gumbinnen, but war broke out too close to home once again.
