Walter Elliott: A Narrative Fiction

Polly leaned against a wall and observed her surroundings thoughtfully. The house, whose owner she was only slightly acquainted with, was occupied by an energetic party. Everywhere she looked, a different social interaction seemed to be occurring. Two girl friends were engaging in a ditzy dance to the swing music playing, couples were kissing or whispering in each other’s ears and alcoholic drinks were being exchanged amongst every party attendant. The odor of cigarettes and alcohol would have been overpowering to anybody not used to the scent, but it was just a familiar aroma to Polly. She was clutching an ice cold glass of some beverage she was handed when she walked in, and occasionally she took a sip of the bitter substance. She knew …show more content…
This brought Polly out of her thoughts of Rudolph, and she approached the group of people who were sitting in a circle in the house’s living room. She knew her time was approaching, and that soon she would be the absolute center of attention. She flattened her black beaded dress and adjusted her matching sequined, slightly feathered headband.
“Of course I’ll play Walter, you know it’s my favorite game,” She said while giving Walter a bright smile.
“Aces babe! Now, let me introduce you to all my friends. Everyone, this is Polly, the dame I told you all about. She drank the most hooch at Rodger’s last party. One of the coolest cats in town. ”
Polly laughed animatedly and said, “Nuts! What a mistake that was. It was a dare though, so of course I took it.”
“Polly Edwards,” Walter paused to laugh and take a sip of whiskey and then said ,”Never one to refuse a

“Kitten, I’ll assume you’ll be wanting a dare?”
“Of course!” “Well,” Walter smiled slyly, “How about 10 minutes alone in that bedroom with me?” Polly was taken aback, but refused to let her face show her reaction. She had never been asked for a dare like this. She was very familiar with the opposite sex, used to being blatantly pursued, but had never had a dare quite like this. “Um, well… I wish I knew what that 10 minutes alone would necessarily imply?”
The room erupted into laughter. The boys nudged each other knowingly and girls rolled their eyes and sniggered. Polly, for the first time, felt embarrassed and childish. Of course she knew what it would imply, but she was nervous. She blushed and looked down. She thought to herself that these people would think she was pathetic girl if she didn’t take up this dare.
Walter began, “Aw, it’s alright Polly. We were having such a juicy time, I just never expected you to be such a square. It’s okay, doll, let’s think of-”
“No,” Polly interjected, “of course I will do it! I’m no

As I walked down the hallway of the Memorial Union, I search for the staircase that will bring me to my haven for the next hour and a half. After I expressed worry to my friend that I would have nowhere to go during my long class breaks, she told me that Sparky’s Den is where she goes to hang out between classes. As I descended down the gray staircase, I pictured what the room would look like; with a name like Sparky’s Den, I saw a crowded room with dark brown wooden paneling on the walls, dim lighting, red, plush booths lining the walls, and gives off a sports bar atmosphere; you can imagine my surprise when I reached the bottom of the stairs and looked into a bland, white room with light brown finishes lining the walls with thirty-or-so tables and booths, and two long couches. As I walked through the opening in the room, I was hit with a cool blast of air. While the Memorial Union was cool, it was no match to the artic breeze of Sparky’s Den; as the cold air hit me, goosebumps rose all over my body.…
