The lyrics to “Village Ghetto Land” describes the lack of environmental justice in African American communities. In song form, Stevie stated, “See the people lock their doors. While robbers laugh and steal. Beggars watch and eat their meal from the garbage cans. Broken glass everywhere, it’s a bloody scene.” This statement insinuates the fact that “Village Ghetto Land,” is a treacherous, poverty ridden environment. Broken glass and bloody scenes symbolizes the vandalism and black on black crimes being committed in their neighborhood.The violent acts criminals bestow upon their community is the very thing that puts fear in the hearts of people living honest lives. It is his belief that the government encourages African American’s to commit heinous crimes against one another. They want African American’s to be so consumed by their surroundings to the point where there is no hope of them ever making it out of the “ghetto ,” beneficial to the government because they’ll always be in control. Although these songs were written over 30 years ago, everything Stevie Wonder expressed in these songs still plague the African American community today
