Another lessoned learned is the importance of these individuals socioeconomic status; their status shapes their social conditions for adaptation. This status determines the type of neighborhood in which they live, the quality of school they attend, and the peers they associate with. The children with poorly educated parents grow up in underprivileged neighborhoods and are subject to poverty. The parents of the second generation children have to consciously strive to preserve traditional values to prevent the second generation from acculturating into the underprivileged segments of American society. Second generation Vietnamese American children either succeed in school and move ahead, or fall behind the status of the parents’ generation. Children growing up in households face obstacles for school success. The parents have few economic resources that can help children do well in school. Many children who did well academically in Vietnam, struggle in the schools in the United States. This causes them to become embarrassed and effects their self-esteem and confidence. Failing behind in classes caused some individuals to skip classes and even resort to joining gangs. The challenges these individuals because of their minority status systematically limits them access to social resources such as opportunities for jobs, education, and housing. It is completely
