Ms.Jenson Touching Spirit Bear
In the beginning of the book Cole Matthews a fifteen year old from Minneapolis, Minnesota arrives in Southeast Alaska in handcuffs. Cole agrees to stay on a neglected island in Alaska all alone for a year to avoid jail time in Minneapolis. Accompanied by Two Native Americans from the Tlingit tribe; one named Garvey, a parole officer, and the other named Edwin, a quiet elder who helped arranged Cole’s banishment. Edwin was the one who built a shelter where Cole would stay during his time of banishment. Cole Matthews was not a Native American, He was a White baby-faced fifteen year old juvenile delinquent who had been in trouble with the law half his life.Cole had never heard of Circle …show more content…
Edwin comes back from Alaska to defend Cole saying that Cole should get a second chance to live in Alaska and the Circle Justice agree. When Cole goes back to Alaska he has to do these exercise that will relieve him of his anger and teach him forgiveness. Edwin tells Cole that Peter will be coming to visit him for he’s not doing well. Peter tried to commit suicide two times and he has fallen into depression. When Peter comes to the island he is very distant, he shows anger towards Cole even pushing Cole when he got in the way. Peter was told he had to try doing the exercise that Cole had been doing, but never did them. As a few weeks went by Peter started to see the change in Cole and begun to exercise with Cole. In the last chapter Peter asked Cole why he was such a jerk, Cole said he was really mad at himself because he thought that he was no good, because his own father would beat him up and treat him like he was nothing. Cole wasn’t really a bad person he just wanted the attention that he never got. Peter fell on his knees and Cole embraced him. Thats when they saw the Spirit bear; Peter didn’t believe that there was a Spirit bear he just thought cole made it up. Cole told Peter that they saw the Spirit bear
